Ki Te Whai Ao Ki Te Ao Marama - To the world of light to the world of knowledge

Paekakariki School Programmes

Paekakariki School believes that the core of teaching is centred around literacy and numeracy. Without an understanding in these subjects we believe that all other subject areas cannot be fully understood.

Because of this, the majority of our time at school is focused on literacy and numeracy especially in the Year 1 to 4 rooms. The basics are important and that includes: spelling, reading, writing in correct ways, basic facts and computation skills. If these skills are learnt and maintained then success will come quickly.

We also believe that education is not just literacy and numeracy. We want to offer our pupils a large range of activities in all areas giving every pupil a chance to experiment and explore different ways to express themselves.

Come and take a look at what we are doing

The Arts

Teachers work hard to encourage children to express themselves in a variety of ways. We have a strong programme in the Arts, where the school enjoys whole school singing once a week, a school choir, dance groups, that perform in local competitions and a school band. We pride ourselves on the standard of our school theatre in which the local community are proud supporters.

Enviro Schools

Paekakariki is a an enviroschool and we are really keen to do the best for our local environment. The enviro club meets regularly every fortnight to work around the school and the local community. This year we are going to improve our ability to recycle our plastics to go along with the recycling of food scraps, paper and cardboard that we do now.

Physical Education/Sport

Paekakariki School students enjoy a range of activites available to us. We believe that phyiscal exercise is important for a healthy lifestyle therefore we place a strong emphasis on this. Breaks are filled with games of patter tennis, gutter board, basketball, soccer, rugby and we have two extensive playgrounds.

Students have the chance to play organized team games every week  and we also have schoolwide and interschool competitions.

We have our own outside pool and offer a full swimming programmes in the first term of each year. The senior school also has a another swimming programme in Term 3.

Te Reo Maori

Peakakariki School offers specialized classes in Maori language. In these classes we support the students in developing an interest and an understanding of Te Reo Maori with the hope that they will continue to develop their confidence in speaking to a higher level.   We also offer kapahaka at all levels of the school.

Outdoor Education

Paekakariki School really enjoys outdoor education and believe that is is important to get away from the classroom as much as possible. The senior classes go on camp each year. These camps range from city camps in Wellington to local camps, overnight camps with a range of physical activities.        The junior school have local sleep overs every two years.  We also enjoy field trips and other visits wherever possible.
